Introduction between professionals from different cultures

International Etiquette

When culture changes, codes change

In short

A course on international etiquette for those who travel, work internationally or welcome foreign guests and delegations. Good manners aren't universal: a polite gesture here may seem awkward or offensive elsewhere.

You'll learn to read cultural codes, handle dress codes, gifts, table manners and greetings in different countries, and avoid gaffes and misunderstandings in cross-cultural communication.

Who it's
for

Those who travel or work internationally, who welcome foreign guests and delegations, sales teams.
Those who organize international events.
And anyone who understands that a kind gesture, outside their own borders, doesn't always mean the same thing.

Objectives

• Understanding that good manners vary from place to place: what is polite here may be offensive elsewhere.
• Preparing for international meetings and negotiations without being caught out by a single detail.
• Avoiding the gaffe you didn't even know you could make.

Topics covered

• Good manners aren't universal: what "polite" means changes from one country to another.
• Greetings and introductions: a handshake, a bow, and how easy it is to get it wrong.
• At the table, everywhere: customs, taboos and the pleasure of other people's conviviality.
• Tipping: where it's expected, where it offends, where it embarrasses.
• The dress code: it changes with country, climate and faith.
• Gifts: what they say about us, and what's best never to give.
• Gestures and symbols: the same sign, opposite meanings.
• Communicating across cultures: managing a team that speaks different languages, welcoming guests and delegations the right way.
• Thematic focuses: a comparison of different regions, from Europe to Asia, from the Anglo-Saxon world to the Gulf countries. Etiquette for those who travel for work, or simply for pleasure.

Where to start

To start, I recommend a path of 4 sessions of an hour and a half each, dedicated to the fundamental topics:

• Good manners aren't universal: how to read the codes of every culture.
• Greetings, introductions and gestures: what changes from country to country.
• At the table and with gifts: customs, taboos and things to keep in mind.
• Communicating across cultures: welcoming foreign guests and delegations the right way.
